Responsibilities and Duties

Our technicians fill many important roles as they move throughout the day in the hospital: assisting veterinarians and veterinary medical teams with day-to-day function of the hospital and communicating with the team to maintain the flow and care of patients; assisting with surgery and anesthesia; obtaining relevant information and history from clients and maintaining proper and complete medical charts; using safe restraining techniques; following standard protocols; maintaining clean, sterile, and organized treatment areas, exam rooms, and lab; collect blood, urine, and stool samples for testing; obtaining radiographs; administering treatments to patients; fill and label medications; client education; proper use of dental equipment and perform dental procedures.

Must be available to take night call and work weekends.

Qualifications and Skills

We require Veterinary Technician Certification or Licensure (CVT, RVT, LVT, AND LVMT).  We prefer 1+ years of experience, but will accept Veterinary Technician students that are working toward their degree and state certficiation.  Must be able to work weekends and take night call with the veterinarian.  Strong communication and leadership skills required.

Job Summary

We are looking for a compassionate Veterinary Assistant to support our veterinary staff and aid in providing excellent care to our patients. Veterinary Assistants are responsible for assisting veterinarians and veterinary technicians in examining and monitoring patients, safely restraining patients, maintaining clean and sanitary work spaces, and many other duties. Our ideal candidate is willing to learn new skills and develop their talents as an assistant, is self-motivated, and has excellent communication skills. A passion for caring for animals is a must.

Responsibilities and Duties

Our Assistants are utilized to their full potential. For this reason, Assistants must be able to multitask, prioritize and manage time efficiently. The following responsibilities include but may not be limited to:

  • Care for animals by feeding, watering, and exercising, bathing as needed
  • Assist in holding and restraining animals during exams and surgical procedures
  • Clean and sterilize instruments, equipment, and tools
  • Ensure exam and operating rooms are stocked and sterilized
  • Ensure all cages, kennels, and patients are clean; change/clean bedding, and kennel materials
  • Change animal bandages
  • Administer oral medications under supervision of a veterinarian or veterinary technician.
  • Assist in collecting samples such as blood or urine for testing
  • Operating in-house lab equipment and setting up specimens for testing
  • Communicate with clients regarding patient history, in-patient status, and aftercare instructions
  • Process and fill prescriptions and refills as directed by veterinarian

Qualifications and Skills

Veterinary Assistants require a high school diploma or equivalent; an associate degree or course credit in veterinary technology or animal science program is a plus.  1+ years of experience in animal care or in a clinic setting is preferred, but we are willing to train on the job.

Assistants must have a basic understanding of animal behavior, health care and husbandry; have a basic understanding of computer operations; be able to pay attention to detail for purposes of maintaining patient records as well as optimizing patient care; be physically capable of lifting and restraining patients safely, and/or handling livestock when necessary; be able to communicate effectively with coworkers and clients.

Must be able to work weekends, extended hours, and some holidays.
